This mystery object, submitted to QAHN for identification, is in the collection of the Morin Heights Historical Association in the Laurentians. Can anyone out there identify this unusual object?

My guess is that it was used to squeeze the whey out of either butter or cheese or both. The top layer of something like canvas (?) can be pushed down on to stuff in the wooden square bowl below. As it is hand made and of wood construction, my guess is that it is quite old indeed - maybe 150 - It would be interesting to check the provenance - Quebec or Ireland - it may have been brought with a pioneer family from Old Country at time of first European settlement ( 1840's...) It looks more Irish than what's called "canadienne" as an artifact.
My guess further is that someone may have made it as a replica of a perhaps more sophisticated metal original - another possibility.
