Christmas at Aunt Eva’s

One of my fondest memories of Christmas in Gaspé are the Christmas Eve family gatherings at Aunt Eva’s. Each Christmas Eve the Boyle Family members (Dorothy, Emily, Eva, Ernest, Eileen, Greta, Alice and Arthur) who happened to be in Gaspé would meet at Eva’s home for this annual Christmas Eve celebration . It was truly a family gathering because those celebrating would extend beyond the immediate family. All nephews, nieces, cousins, girl and boy friends would be welcome as well.

Remembering the Brave

How appropriate that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife spent Remembrance Day at the Sai Wan War Cemetery in Hong Kong to pay homage to those men who fought valiantly to defend this city from the Japanese invaders. The cemetery is the final resting place for 283 Canadians who died during the Second World War.

Help! Old Women's Hockey Photos Needed!

REQUEST FOR OLD PHOTOS OF WOMEN’S HOCKEY PLAYERS:

I am preparing a “coffee table book” on ladies’ hockey history in Quebec. A fascinating story! Since the 1890s, women have been playing, among other places, in Montreal, Sherbrooke, Quebec City, Three-Rivers and Lachute. And Anglo-Quebecers have been the real pioneers of the game in the province.

So, if you have stories to share or old pictures (1890-1940) of Quebec women’s teams or action shots of women playing hockey, I’d be very grateful if you could contact me.

Dear Editor,

I just wanted to say what a lovely surprise to find this wonderful site.
My great grandmother Melvina Chedore was born in L'Anse Au Gascon.
I am going to write for the magazine and submit it. I just wanted to say I am so glad to have found a site related to the Gaspe.

My great grandmother left Gaspe and settled in Lennoxville with her English husband Thomas Maskrey. Her son Arthur was killed when my mum was 1 year old. My mum was raised in the United States

Looking for Charles Scholes, Motorist and Railway Man

Dear Editor,

In 1909, Charles Scholes took his wife, daughter (later Violet Grier, my maternal grandmother) and her fiancé on the first motoring trip from New Carlisleto Rocher Percé. Photographs were taken along the route. I have their little photo album which has 17 pictures taken at the time (unfortunately without any captions).

Looking for James Gillis

Dear Editor,

I was hoping you could help me in my search for records on James Gillis (Gillies) (Gillice) born in 1815. The "Matapedia-Restigouche Trail" says that he walked from the Miramichi to Runnymede after the great fire of 1825.

It is possible he went there with parents or to a relative who was already settled there. He settled in Runnymede and was married in 1843 to Caroline Borland.

The Census of Matapedia shows his family on page 5 and on page 7 Adams which is the other side of my family.

Great articles! My family settled in Douglastown in 1784. In the article on the Loyalists ["The Loyalists of Gaspesia: 1784-1984," by Raymond Garrett], I found my great grand father's name, William Kennedy. I actually just got back from a visit in Douglastown.
