[2]As a regional museum, the Musée de la Gaspésie collects, conserves and disseminates artifacts and documents that speak to the long and rich history and heritage of the Gaspé.

Physical Description:

The museum was inaugurated June 17 1977 and is the second most frequently visited tourist attraction in the Côte-de-Gaspé MRC, after Forillon National Park.

[3]Anchored to the location where Jacques Cartier took possession of New France in 1534, the museum has a magnificent view of the Bay of Gaspé.

The permanent exhibition features the region’s history and temporary exhibitions are held featuring the works of Gaspesian artists.

Collections:

[4]Ethnology, history, the fine arts, archaeology and the natural sciences make up the underpinnings of the Musée de la Gaspésie collection.

All the artifacts conserved by the museum testify to activities that, over the years, were the life-blood of the Gaspé Peninsula: fishing and shipping; carpentry; agriculture and hunting; domestic activities and household objects; religious artifacts and works of art.

Throughout the years, the collection has grown and today the museum has more than 5,000 artifacts that testify to the social history and culture of the Gaspé Peninsula.

--The museum boutique offers products that are representative of the Gaspé Peninsula’s identity and culture. Gaspesian artists are featured in the boutique.
