 | | Logo. | The Gaspesian British Heritage Village (or Britville) was opened in the summer of 1989 with a mission is to foster mutual understanding among the many Quebec communities, especially the Amerindians, French and English, by showcasing the history and culture of Gaspesians of British ancestry and their contribution to the development of the Gaspé Coast.
The village recounts the history of these settlers from the 1760's to the early 1900's, with villagers dressed in period costumes and participating in traditional activities. The idea for the Gaspesian British Heritage Village was born in 1984 when the bicentennial of the Loyalists' arrival on Gaspé soil was celebrated.

(Photo: GBRV) | Located on 40 acres of field and woodland, the Village offers a peaceful trip back through time with 24 historic buildings, villagers dressed in period costumes, farm animals, and quiet forested paths leading to a heritage lighthouse and access to the beach. A thorough visit can last an entire morning or afternoon, but shorter visits can easily be accommodated.
The majority of the buildings on the site of the Gaspesian British Heritage Village were brought to the site to
reconstruct a village from yesteryear. The Sillarsville United Church was transported from more than 100
kilometers away.
The Almond Art Centre, was originally built as a barn in Shigawake in 1850 by James Almond. His
great-grandson, film director Paul Almond, had it re-erected plank-by-plank on the site in 1994.
The oldest building on site, the Duthie Tavern, dates from the late 1700's. The Number Nine School from New Richmond was built in 1901 to replace an 1830's log schoolhouse. It was in use as a school until 1947.

Special Activities:
Village Boutique:
The Boutique is located in a heritage building, the W. H. Willett store, built in 1910 by the grandson of Loyalist William Willett. It carries a selection of handicrafts, artwork, jewellery and specialty items.

The Gaspesian British Heritage Village includes a small restaurant in a heritage home which offers simple
dining fare for the entire family. During special events, canteen and bar services are available.
Rental of facilities:
Site facilities can be rented for family occasions, weddings, office parties and other gatherings.
Annual Traditional Days and Bluegrass Festival:
A 4-day event usually held over Labour Day weekend draws thousands of bluegrass enthusiasts to the region every year. |
